PATTYDUKE$

So, I keep having this conversation about "the female MC" with friends. Most often I question the stereotypes and biases against feMC's. I must admit that it really takes a lot for me to take them seriously. It's like they're either too gully and raw..or they're just too overtly explicit..or they male-bash excessively. Either way, they often come off as trying too hard. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty who have perfected a balance between the two, opting to communicate a relationship between sexuality and independence, throwing in juusst the right amount of sensuality, and offering lyrical, relatable stories of life in the hood.

I first saw her hit the stage with Bahamadia and other ladies at Rocksteady's 31st Anniversary at Lincoln Park (Newark, NJ), but she really caught my attention at a sneaker event at Southpaw.
Chad, Relly Rell and I agreed: PattyDukes stole show.

This five foot suttin from the BX killed it. She entered the room following an anecdote about how she beat a dude's ass for trying to steal her ipod..and she made us believe that she had the balls to do it.

She proved to the entire crowd that night that she could own the stage and serve as an equal, if not superior, counterpart for her partner Reph. With multiple flows and the ability to pull it off in english and spanish, plus the stamina to keep her cool and keep that fickle crowd hyped for the duo's entire set, this lady really made people stand up and take notice. She had me questioning my doubts about whether there will be an unstoppable female MC..even if it was only for that night. (sidenote*: DJ Clark Kent did a half hour set..spinnin some classics. i'm talkin funk, soul, he did a premiere tribute. Nothing...these people stood there with arms crossed....they were only there for free giftbags i guess. PattyDukes and RephStar did a great job of gettin the crowd amped for a few.)*

As Fall Approaches...

and the weather gets cooler, there's nothing better than
wrapping yourself up in a dope hooded or jacket.
City living is all about having the flyest gear...that's why
I have to give kudos to CTRL's new fall line...and they should
be giving kudos to my wallet and generosity...but that's neither
here nor there...
These are my favourites:

i love this because it reminds me of something my moms had back in the day...The oversized cardigan definately transcends two periods of fashion...and it happens to be this season's piece of choice. I know everybody's still on the whole 80's thing, but I can't front.
I was, in fact, born in the 80's.. what I remember though is straight up 90's cross color clothes and dresses with rugged boots..hoodeds and allat good stuff. CTRL does a great job of modernizing that whole late 80's-90's asthetic. Gota love it.

REST IN PEACE

One of the beautiful things about life is the
fact that generations overlap and the past
will always influence the future.
Yesterday, LEP asked me, "What's the meaning
of History?" If i had an actual answer for that one
best believe it would have been deep..
But one thing I know is that the history others have
made, in many ways, helped me shape my present
and my future. There's no way you can be successful
in your future without understanding your past.

My Uncle Ange passed away on September 11, 2008.
He was awesome. We used to talk for hours and he
had the best stories. He always shared his history with me.
I love you always Ange and I will truly always miss you.
Rest In Peace.

Also, Rest in Peace to all the other souls who were lost
on that tragic day seven years ago.

Michael Marsicano

He happens to be a friend of a friend...
I happen to love his work.

Some of it reminds me of my dreams...

He also did the cover art for Gilgongo's latest release, "Dreams and Miracles" ..

NAME THAT DANCE

The wop and the cabbage patch were preceded by the moonwalk.
Every generation has their classic dance moves.
So anyway, as i was getting off the B train at 34th, i saw some kids battling...breaking vs something else.
i have a love for new and i had never seen what they were doing...
kind of reminded me of 80's voguing or popping...both of which are
making a huge comeback. Being the naturally curious me,
i stopped to ask...its called"tectonik". Its a mix of techno, electro and
hip hop dance that's really big in france and other parts of europe.
I'd heard of it but never seen it...Interesting.
